Sustainability at pema: Our commitment to a better future

At pema, we see sustainability as an integral part of our corporate philosophy. We are actively committed to environmental protection, social responsibility and ethical business practices. Our commitment covers various areas and initiatives:

Climate protection and CO2 reduction

In cooperation with KLIMAKTIV TÜBINGEN, we have been recording our Corporate Carbon Footprint (CCF) at our sites in Wolfschlugen and Romania every year since 2019. This analysis helps us to identify CO2 sources and take targeted measures to reduce them. We have set ourselves ambitious climate goals for 2030:

  • Transition to electric mobility and plug-in hybrids at our main location in Germany
  • 30% reduction in Scope 1 emissions compared to 2019
  • Net CO2 zero by 2040 in accordance with the Climate Pledge initiative

Actions already achieved and ongoing initiatives:

  • 100% green electricity purchase in Germany since 2022
  • Installation of a solar system in Romania for full self-power supply since 2024

Our efforts are already having an effect: With sales growth of 41% between 2019 and 2023, our emissions rose by just 13%. This demonstrates our improved CO2 efficiency and commitment to sustainable growth.

UN Global Compact

Since February 2022, we have been a proud member of the United Nations Global Compact. We are committed to complying with the ten principles in the areas of human rights, labor standards, environmental protection, and the fight against corruption. Every year, we report on our progress in a Communication on Progress (COP) report. This commitment underscores our commitment to continuously improving our business practices and making a positive contribution to global sustainability.

The Climate Pledge

As a member of The Climate Pledge since August 2021, we are committed to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2040. This includes implementing decarbonization strategies through real business changes and innovations, including efficiency gains, renewable energy, material reductions, and other measures to avoid carbon emissions.

The story of pema: A journey of innovation and reliability

Founding and early years
pema elektrotechnik gmbh was founded in 1974 and initially established itself as a supplier of cables, wires, cable glands, and assembled cable harnesses. In the years that followed, the company steadily increased its range of products and capacities. In 1990, pema expanded its portfolio to include further commercial products and a segment with industrial connectors. One year later, in 1991, production and administration were expanded, which underlined the company's growing importance in the sector.
Turning point and expansion
A decisive moment in history was 2002, when Rolf Hahn and Rolf Mundinger, both former IBM executives, took over the company. Despite economic challenges following September 11, 2001, they invested in the future of the company and transformed pema from a craft business to an industrial company. In 2003, the production portfolio was expanded to include mechanical components, which made pema a system supplier.
International orientation
The expansion abroad began in 2004 with the expansion of production in the Czech Republic, followed by Slovakia in 2005. An important step was the founding of the subsidiary pema electrotehnic s.r.l. in Romania in 2006. Rolf Hahn recognized the potential of the Alba Iulia site early on and thus laid the foundation for sustainable growth.

An important meeting marked the beginning of an extraordinary partnership: In Alba Julia, Rolf Hahn met Laura Moga. With her language skills and legal expertise, she became commercial managing director of the site in Romania in 2006. Her husband Ioan, a very experienced technician, took over the technical management — a task that he fulfilled with passion and competence.
  
The relationship between the Hahn and Moga families developed over the years into a deep friendship that goes far beyond business relationships. This was further strengthened in 2021 when her daughter Denisa Kilyen joined the company and was also successfully involved.

Today, Romania, with modern production facilities and a company-owned training center, is not only a central part of pema's international orientation, but also a symbol of the power of trust and cooperation based on partnership.
Generational change and modernization
Jochen Hahn joined the company in 2006 and Nic Hahn followed in 2018, which marked the beginning of the generational change. In parallel, the company grew steadily, with expansions of production capacities and the opening of new locations. In 2011, a new manufacturing site was opened in Romania with over 2,500 square meters of production space, followed by further expansions in the following years.

pema continuously invested in modernization and digitalization. In 2019, a company-owned training center was opened in Romania, and the first digital research projects were carried out in cooperation with Fraunhofer IAO. In 2021, significant investments were made in modern machinery and IT infrastructure.

Wolfschlugen, Germany

The headquarters of pema in Wolfschlugen near Stuttgart serves as a central hub for all of the company's strategic and innovative activities. On an area of 1,800 square meters, 35 employees work here in various central departments: Purchasing, Sales, Technology & Development, Quality Management and Scheduling. In addition, the location houses a logistics center and specialized manufacturing for bespoke assemblies. This concentration of expertise enables pema to respond quickly and flexibly to customer requirements and develop innovative solutions.

Alba Iulia, Romania

With 3,000 square meters of production space and 165 employees, pema's own production plant in Alba Iulia is pema's largest location. Central functions such as work preparation, quality assurance and warehousing are located here. The size and capacity of this location underline pema's ability to efficiently process large orders while ensuring the highest quality standards.

Mezőtúr, Hungary

In Mezőtúr, pema operates another manufacturing plant with 2,600 square meters of production space and 65 employees in a joint venture. This strategic partnership not only expands pema's production capacities, but also strengthens the company's presence in Central Europe.
